Awesome website, it brought back tons of memories. The best four years of my Navy career were spent stationed in the P.I. I was actually first there in 1979 on the USS Coral Sea (CV-43), then later on the USS Blue Ridge from 90-92. I saw Olongopo go through many changes. I can't even begin to recount all the short times, peso shows and bottles of San Miguels I had.

I would love to hear from anyone who was stationed at San Miguel between 82-86. I had a blast there.  I would also like to see some pictures of Barrio Barretto and my second home Subic City home of the nasty girls and the deaf mute. I will try to dig up any old pictures I may have and hope the rest of you do the same. KEEP THIS WEBSITE ALIVE!!!    Siggy Na.

Great site! I can't wait to share it with my sisters. I just wish my Dad was still alive to see it. He was Chief David Goins (ret) he was stationed in San Diego with the 7th fleet and visited Subic often. In 1967 the whole family moved to San Miguel for 2 years. I met and married my sailor husband there; Mickey Collier. If any one recognizes dad or Mickey's names please e-mail. Great memories and great site. Bye for now, Pat Collier

What a great site. Brings back lots of memories of the times spent at Subic and Olongapo. I was at Naval Radio Station in  San Antonio and would like to hear from anyone who was there at that time. Also if anyone knows of any website pertaining to that base. It was a long time ago but still a great and vivid memory in my mind. Thanks   Ed Nelson

During part of my tour at San Miguel, I was the sports editor of the base newspaper, The South China Sea Sentinel.  Had the pleasure of meeting a journalistic colleague who was a staff writer for the Subic base newspaper, The Subic Bay News (I think that's what it was called).  His name was Teddy del Rosario I think.  If anyone knows of Teddy or where he might be after all these years, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

What a flood of memories when I found this site.  My wife and I lived just outside Olongapo in a town called Kalakalan.  There were numerous Americans, saliors and marines with families in this town.  It was located just on the outskirts of the city of Olongapo.  We communted every day we had duty to San Miguel about a 45 minute ride.  I would be interested in hearing from anyone stationed at San Miguel during 66-68 or from those who were in my detachment while in Nam.  Det bravo Big look spooks. 67-68.  Look forward to hearing from someone.

I read through all the back postings to the site. Wow, the memories came flooding back. My wife and I go back to the PI at least every 2 years. She is from a province called Nueva Ecija. Anyway, we always spend a couple of nights in Angeles City and it is slowly getting back to the way it was. I am going back in March and I hope to get down to Subic and up to San Miguel. I still have shipmates that live in San Antonio. We stay about 14 days and they always have to drag me to the plane because I don't want to go. Still a great place. Guys get back if you can. It's different, but the barbecue and the beer still taste the same and all those familiar smells you remember are still there. I also have told people here about the good old days and no one will believe me. Guess you had to be there. I was also stationed on the USS Oklahoma City from 1971 to 1973 and we were always there. Good times, good people, and good food. Happy New Year!!!!

Great site.  Keep up the good work.  None of us will ever forget those tours.  Some of the best in the world.  I was back for a visit in 1992 just before Subic closed and still loved it.  Would be great to hear from any of the many buddie from those days. I've put up a small page for NAVCOMMSTA Phil on the military.com site if anyone's interested.  Quite a few contacts there for anyone interested, although this site is a lot more fun.  Mabuhay from Green Valley, AZ.

I was stationed at San Miguel and working for the Naval Security Group. In our bldg. we had to ride the cattle car to get there. I lived on base for about 6 months and then I was only there for work. I'm looking for some of the guys who were stationed with me in Bremerhaven, Germany. In early 1968 we left Germany and ended up in San Miguel. How I would love to re-live those golden days in Olongapo, and San Antonio. I went out on detachment on the Enterprise in May of ' 69 til Aug. I left th P.I. in Sept. of '69 for discharge. If any of you guys are out there, e-mail me. I would love to talk with you.

God it seems like only yesterday.  The rainy season, the beautiful smell in the gentle breezes after the rains.  Drinking beer at the Nippa Hut on the beach by the South China Sea.  Listening to the local band doing song parodies at the NCO club.  Fred the bartender, Chari the beautiful little waitress.  The couple of slot machines, the occasional show.  the trips to Po on the Victory Liner.  The loud blaring music and wild dancing in and out of the what seemed to be hundreds of bars in Olongapo.  The nights at the Crossroads, getting drunk and having fun.  Crazy days but great memories.  A real life experience.  Loved it!  Anyone there at that time drop me a line.

Just want to let you know that this is one heck of a site.  You must spend about 23 hours/day on this thing.  Absolutely great!!  I was stationed in San Miguel for about a year and a half and spent many many beers in Olongapo - what a place.  I am planning on returning in June of this year (01) just to find out how much things have changed.  Fortunately I kept a few photos of when I was there - but have many more memories than photos, but wish I had taken more.  Crossroads, beer, club ORO, club RIo, beer, Victory Liners, jeepneys, beer, girls - and yes we did work some of the time.  I realize that "you can't go back", but am gonna try anyway.  The cold San Miguel, Lumpia, and the scenery will be worth it even if I am a bit (quite a bit) older now.  Thanks for a job well done.

I will always remember NPO. Stationed at the receiver site it seems like just yesterday I went to the Cross Roads for a  cold San Miguel.  Took a jitney to San Antonio and got another cold one before going to Olangapo.  The long, hot, dry, dusty, smelly and bumpy road to Subic will always have a place in my heart. Would not trade my experiences and friendships along the road for anything. Maybe RM2 Sheldon Lee Luce or his brother Gerry will get in touch. Gusto Servasa Mas Malimig Mahal.  MABUHI!

Mabuhay to all of you folks who were in the P.I.  I was stationed at San Miguel from 82-86, but with the newly assigned Air Force units to the base. I was with Detachment 2 Space Communications Division, of the Air Force Communications Command, and the other unit was the 17th Surveillance Squadron, of the Air Force Space Command, whom we supported. My memories are of the country club atmosphere of San Miguel.  The pace was easy and relaxed, and the beach and small community off base made it a tranquil location.  My wife and I had our two children born at Cubi Hospital, and now they are fully grown. The San Miguel Softball Tournament, the Captains Cup (which we won each year, yeah!) stand out in my mind.  Also, can't forget the clubs down at the crossroads and on base, the Wayne D. May club were favorite hangouts.  Anyways, best to all of you and the Philippines and times we had there are frequently on my mind.

I worked at the Terminal Bldg. in the set 8 computer room. I played on the base basketball team "The Comets", with such notables as Ike Chestnut, his buddy Robby and Len from Iowa. This site is like taking a stroll down memory lane for me. It's like yesterday, going down to "PO" spending the evening in the "Jungle", either staying overnite or catching the last bus back for mid-rats.I appreciate the memories. San Miquel was my first duty station. I enjoyed the times sooo much, I stayed for the career. Can't wait for the pictures of the base.

MESSAGE:  Would like to hear from any CT Marines stationed at San Miguel about the same time as myself.  Am getting very bad with names after all these years, but would love to run into some old pals from there.  From there I went to Co. My wife, Paulette, and I really enjoyed our tour at San Miguel.  She learned to make lumpia and still fixes it for me from time to time.  Served with many great people, including Lee Girard (died 2 years ago), John Hunt (retired CWO4 living in Pensacola), EJ Hertel (last heard from was in Louisville, Ky) and many more whose names are lost to time.  After a tour at NSA I got out, was with Oakland PD for 10 years, and then on to law school.  Went in the Army reserves and retired after 6 months in Saudi during Desert Storm.  My most memorable time was when a group of us left San Miguel on motorcycles, turned north at the crossroads, later turned east on dirt roads and went all the way to Clark, fording rivers and seeing parts of the PI not visited by GI's since WW II.  Drop me a line and let's see if I can reach back in my memory.

William (Bill) Elder, RM1, USN Retired, 1965 - 1966, 1990 - till closure
welderrm1@juno.com and william.elder@losangeles.af.mil

I served twice at San Miguel. First time from July 1965 until December 1966 and then again Jan 1990 until its' closure. Having built a home nearby, I often used the base during my other tours of duty in Sangley Point Jan 1970 until its' closure and July 1973 until November 1975 when I was in Cubi Pt.

During my trips subsequent to Pinatubo, I have seen the base become a lackluster version of what it once was. Since our house in San Miguel Barrio is but a hundred feet from the southern fence line, I can see daily  what has and has not happened to the base.

When I was first there, like other sailors I went to the cross roads. Back then, they had about ten or so bars running nearby the access road that went to the base. Can't remember any live bands, but a lot of loud music. On the plus side, there weren't too many ways to get into trouble and it was relatively quiet in comparison to Barretto and Olongapo.

On the negative side, you had to travel an hour to get  to major excitement, if that was your desire. Any body wants to swap stories or ask questions about the place, please respond to BOTH of the above addresses.

I was a D/WMC as Dr. Norberg would say. We were there from I am giving a presentation tomorrow on "What I learned from the people of the Philippines",  Also, I spent the last year going through boxes & boxes of stuff.  I came across the most amazing memories of San Miguel!!  I am really missing the San Miguel experience - the people, the place, the activities.  Hi to everyone who may come across this message who was there when we were.

Update:  Greg was 3 yrs old when we arrived.  He was a Marine in SECGRU!!! for over 7 years.  I never would have guessed that back then.  Was stationed in Hawaii & Scotland.  Now working at The Gallup Organization doing fascinating surveys (post 9/11 was one.  9/11 also happens to be his birthday). Baby David was born 8 weeks before we left San Miguel.  He is now married, Jaren & he expecting 1st baby, excellent soccer player & is with Major League Soccer headquarters in NYC.

I went to grad school in 1975 & got a masters in rehab counseling & independent living rehab.  The phenomenal time in the Philippines left me horribly bored back in the States.  I have worked since then & participated in numerous public service & community service activities.

Would love to hear from anyone who was there during our tenure.  Am also thinking of Doming, Diana, & many other Filipino/a.  Wondering how their lives are post-Mt. Pinatubo, etc. Best wishes to all. Semper Fi

I have yet to see or hear of anyone knowing exacly what happened, and I have often wondered what was made of it after those of us who saw it were gone. I will never forget Hubbard yelling for a poncho...It was good duty though, and I was proud as all hell to have served there.  There were plenty of times we could have been killed, but we did'nt.  I had one of the lasst birds (C-141) out of Clark AFB....We landed a few hours later in Guam in time to watch the Challenger explode.

San Miguel is my hometown! After two tours, I retired in January 1973 and just celebrated 30 years of retirement and still live in San Antonio. NCSP was buried by the 1991 Mt Pinatubo eruption, evacuated immediately and turned over to Phil Navy in Sept 91. It is now Naval Education and Training Center (service school command).  The golf course is now 18 holes and is used by many retirees and expats in the area. San Antonio now has 24 hour lights, cable TV, telephones and concreted streets. I had a bar (D'Lions Den in lower crossing and Dirty Dan's in upper crossing) from 72-74. Then I sold my soul for a ration card and went to work for the Navy Resale System - NEX for the next 19 years.  Worked right up to end of October 1992.  Base (Cubi was all that was left) closed in November and last active duty pers sailed away on the Belleau Wood.

I have yet to see or hear of anyone knowing exacly what happened, and I have often wondered what was made of it after those of us who saw it were gone. I will never forget Hubbard yelling for a poncho. It was good duty though, and I was proud as all hell to have served there.  There were plenty of times we could have been killed, but we didn't.  I had one of the last birds (C-141) out of Clark AFB. We landed a few hours later in Guam in time to watch the Challenger explode.

AlEctor@aol.com

My first duty station out of RM "A" School. God, what a friggin' madhouse. When Vietnam broke out for real at the end of August, we went port & starboard and all of a sudden 6 carriers were terminated with us. I usually had the pleasure of running Com7thFlt (Okie Boat) and the Coral Sea -- 4 to 6 channels each, send & receive. Worked for who was then the youngest Master Chief RM in the Navy -- Alvie McClaren. Busy?? It was so damned busy I was later assigned to a job doing nothing but QSL'ing for flash messages. It was sheer insanity -- 60 to 100 wpm teletype circuits going 7X24, losing ships for hours, sometimes days at a time due to lack of frequencies, sun spots, screwed up crypto gear or some crazy atmospheric shit.

But then...there was Po-town or the Crossroads or if one was totally insane, dependent daughters on the base. Overnight & Out of Bounds chits, liberty cards, shore patrol, black market smokes, Marilyn's #1 Super Club in Subic City, crazy Filipino's out during election time waving guns, bouts of the clap, base restriction, fights over bar hogs, great Filipino bands, the Beatles, the Supremes, the Gaytoppers at the Club Oro, the Capones Islands, Sari-sari stores with 1 peso San Miguel's, bar girls with hearts that "loved you, no shit -- buy me washing machine." Would I do it all over again? Damn Right!!!

Ahhhh, memory lane.   Living in Barrio Burgos, sneaking into and out of "off limits" clubs down at the Crossroads, faking off-base passes for the Grunts at the gate...those were the days! Monkey meat on-a-stick, paying the bar-fines to take your honey-ko out for the evening, sleeping upstairs in one of the clubs when the Shore Patrol came around to enforce curfew.   I can still taste the lumpia and chicharrones with pepper vinegar in the Blue Heaven club. Dancing the bump to a low-fi jukebox. Taking all the girls from the club out on a Sunday picnic by the river, while their little sisters washed clothes and the guys went hiking up in the hills waiting for the girls to finish cooking lunch. Dirt bike races on the base motocross track, the annual base picnic and carabao races. Getting smashed at the Wayne D. May Club because my girl always wanted to go "on base" for the band and the dancing. Never needed to go down to Olongapo, except to go shopping. Keep your Subic City. Every Sunday going to the cock-fights up in San Narcisso, now That's Entertainment !

ken.mel@verizon.net

I was a CYN3 stationed at San Miguel (NAVCOMSTAPHIL) in the middle to late 1960's.  Although I don't remember the exact dates, those were two of the best years of my life.  I remember walking from the barracks to work during the "rainy" season when you couldn't see three feet in front of you. We worked hard and steady (I worked with torn-tape relay, etc.) and we played hard and steady.  The Tanduay Rum, San Miguel beer, bands in Olangapo copying American and British bands, and the local females added a lot to the fun.   There were some good things to do on base as well.  The beach, Capones Islands, swimming pool, sauna, etc. were a good way to spend spare time.  The only people that I remember by name are Henry Seine and Percy Llewelyn.  I welcome anyone that wants to communicate.

Now am captain of sportfishing charter boat, "Fury" in Dana Point CA

Did it all in message center...last job watch supv.   USNR as most of our section was....Greg...? a converted TM2 took me on my first TAD on USS FOX (and liberty in The Jungle in Po.) Used to run with another Greg..? CTR....Po town, Clark AFB ( to see Supremes), Manila, and ride on the V-liners  to anywhere, to kill time.  Remember checking in at the base...we would saluate the CO and he would just wave back.  Cross-Roads club down the way...."RRB"...where the bad girls worked!!!  Playing basketball after the mid-watch (sked was eve-day-mid-56hrs liberty, then start it all over again.).....My saluate to those RM's in the message center downstairs....."port and starboard" duty for 6 months while I was there   This is where we learned about cameras and stereo equip.....Oh yeah...you probably had one of those TEAC reel to reel tape recorders, or at least wanted one!!!   Surprised no one mentioned "Shit River" and throwing coins in the water for the kids....to watch them dive to get them.....And perhaps the "East End Club".....down by the market place.   Returned to the P.I. in 1977 (TAD from Kami Seya Japan) for a siminar on comm equip. at Clark AFB, and made a return trip to San Miguel...was fun to see again....not much changed, but was fun meeting the current group of sailors at San Miguel...sure we had a few beers, and talked about old times!!!

william.elder@losangeles.af.mil and welderrm1@juno.com

My name is Bill Elder, I was a boot camp E-2 when I showed up for the first time at San Miguel but left as a boot camp E-4. I had returned for one more tour at San Miguel as an E-6 and stayed until the bases closed.  Many of you recall the memories. Funny, when I first arrived, I thought I had been had by the Navy. I wasn't to figure out, till much later, what favor the Navy had done for me. Amongst them were allowing me the privileges of meeting my new bride. Till I saw her, I had no desire to marry a Pinay. Yes they were and are still, strikingly beautiful, but, the conditions of the country were less than I was willing to accept. Then Lita and I met and changed my life for the good, forever. With her, I was able to see beyond my perceptions. I saw the love of the islands and the people that populate them .  I found their traditions rich with history and identical in nature to what Europeans (especially the Spanish) had and to some degree, what Americans had in better days.

I could go on in dissertation, but why?   I return there periodically and am easing my way to stay over there for the greater part of a year and simply come stateside for an occasional visit to see the kids and grandkids.  Unfortunately the kids do not want to visit their mothers birthplace. They don't share the same love of the simple life that I do. Nor of the undying spirit of the people that will most likely never have better than they currently have, unless they are lucky.

We here fight traffic, prices and daily lives to simply survive. Only in the Rp can you find the cheapest of transportation. Imagine, traveling from San Miguel to Olongapo for barely $1. Air Conditioned no less.  Try to get halfway across most towns for the money here.

I would like to contact friends that were there during the same time or shortly after. Would love to see some pictures from that time as I have lost mine over the years. Favorite hang outs were Plato's at the Crossroads. Buzzard in Baretto. Miami Club in Subic City. What a great time we all had while stationed in San Miguel. The receiver site was the best place to work. Met some of the greatest people I have ever known while there. I can't find any information or pictures on the web from those years. It's like a forgotten time. If anyone has information on shipmates or where to find pictures from the late 70's please let me know. Or just contact me if you want to swap stories regardless of when you were there.

I was at the main terminal building during my stay at  San Miguel.  I  was in the main control room,  first floor.  I can almost describe the layout of those spaces down to the location of the shit cans.  I guess you would say I was a tech controller.  I seem to remember all the younger guys were looking to get the 2318 job code number, which also gave one just a bit more money..  At any rate some of the guys that were there was,, RM2  Boss,,,  RM3 Gene Sheperd,,  and of course and I would love to see or hear from this guy  RM3 Jerry Smith from Houston Texas..  Now to some of the good stuff,, I think, No I know I would love to go back and do it  ALL!!  again,  but I am a firm believer of the Miller commercial that  says  " YOU ONLY GO ROUND ONCE".  As most of you old salts have written , I spent a lot of time at the crossroads and any and all other places from the main gate all the way to Olongapo.. I can't seem to remember an inch of that road I haven't traveled.   I've even ridden several miles of it on the backs of various large grey animals,, in various states of conciousness!!  You will note that I put at the top of this page sometime in 66.  I left San Miguel I think in the latter part of 66 or early 67 .  Me and a fellow by the name of Ltjg. Grady , an ET whom I don"t remember a name at all and another radioman by the name of Izzard all went to Cubi Point to outfit a group of communications vans for a deployment to Viet Nam.  I don't really know how long we stayed at Cubi but we did load all of these five vans up and away we go to Danang for a while.  This group by the way was called ATCU-100,, AIR TRANSPORTABLE COMMUNICATIONS UNIT  100.  The idea in all of this was to load all of this "stuff" onto a C-130 , go in-country, push it all out on parachutes, follow them down and thereby set up a communication station behind lines in enemy territory..Well I'm still here so this should tell any who reads this that we never tried this cockamamiee idea.  Well I think thats about enough,  If any of you guys out there should take time to read this I sure would like to hear from you..  I tell everyone now that this was the good times in my life.. I hear the guys now days talking about going to the war ie.  desert storm ,, Iraq,  well my friends , those are minor sqirmishes compared..    Let me hear from any body who wants to chat..

Lots of memories but not too good at remembering names, I remember some last names like Shadwell, Lewis, Price, Sam Satoa (big samoan guy), I remember going on "skeds: to the crossroads and hanging out at "My Place" and eating "Mama's Tacos" there in the crossroads. Hardly if ever went to Subic City or Olongapo, everything was basically there in the crossroads. I remember a festival on base one year that was sort of a take off of Woodstock. I remember the guy doing Jimi Hendrix's National Anthem getting beat up. I remember the great cheese omelets they served in the mess hall every morning. I was stationed at first in the Terminal Building then moved out to the Receiver Site. The morning bus rides out to the Site with a Filipino driver we nicknamed "Parnelli Jones." I remember the flood they had there and that those stationed there received a PUC of the Philippines for helping some get off their roofs. I remember going to the Wayne D. May club on my first night there and tasting a Michelob (which tasted like p--- water) and got hooked on San Miguel beer after that. I lived out in San Antonio (Posadas compound) where I took a "special" jeepney ride to the base each morning. Costing about 30 cents or 2 pesos at the time. Back in the days when you could trade a dollar for 7 pesos unless you knew some filipina who could take it out to the market and get as much as 12 pesos on the dollar. Ahhh those were the days.

Crypto Maintenance at Receivers and on Quic Vans out of Subic; CTF-75 support
Bruce.Dettloff@onsemi.com

My Dad ( CTRC Don Dettloff ) and the family moved up from Sangley Point around the time the base opened.  I was in fourth grade back then.  I remember the outdoors theater and a girl named Gail Depyster, who I had a crush on.  Also a Mrs. Barker who made a killer chocolate cake.

I returned around 1974 after completing  Crypto C-schools at Mare Island.  I worked at receivers for a short time and then was sent to Subic to support CTF-75 when it was in the GOT.  I had a ($10 per month) two story house in San Antonio.  I used to catch the bus to Subic in the mornings and then back in the afternoons.  My girl friend (we called her Baby, but I just don’t remember her real name) and I used to go into the EM club for a meal at least once a week.  I remember the food as being really good in the EM club.  I had a small motorcycle while I was there.  It broke and was then stolen while I was out in the GOT.  I submitted paperwork about the theft but never got it back.  I was later told that it was in the possession of a PC officer and that they would need to bribe someone higher than him for me to get it back.

When first sent to San Miguel I had a room directly across from the snack bar.  I remember them cooking up ham & cheese sandwiches on the grill and scraping the flying termites away from what they were cooking.  I also remember a rain coming and watching the water rise in the street like it rises in a bath tub.  You sure can get a down pour in the PI. It was great both times.

Served at San Miguel from 1971-1974. Started out in the commcen as an RMSA, worked most positions there: relay, receivers, traffic checker, ZDK clerk, Svc clerk, UNIVAC 1004 and DSTE Op (ancient history) and later moved into Tech Control. Left San Miguel in 1974 as an RM2 and I am currently retired (RMC) in Severn, MD. My chops at Magoo were “Peewee”. Used it in the commcen and TCF until they made us use initials only and then I switched to “RCV”.

Had some great times at Magoo. Not only the beer and the ladies, but had fun riding motorcycles around the place. Planted rice, rode caribou, etc….had a good old time. Soon as I could, I moved off base and live in the Fabunan compound. Shared a place with Jerry Helmig (where are ya?) for some time and got my own shack up place in the same compound. Some memories in that place.

If anyone remembers me, drop me a line! I would really love to get back there someday. Is there ever going to be a NCSP reunion in San Antonio? That would be something that I could make. Enuff rambling!!

Thought at the time that it would be there forever, but now understand the meaning of taking pictures. I suppose most everyone else had the same thoughts. It all seems like a blur now, but do remember some of the names here. Planning on returning (to take pictures of course) in the spring of 2004. Nearly 15 years after I left. Hard to believe that 3 short years would have such an impact on my life. Have been able to track down or be tracked down by a few from there .. ie .. Mike Kennedy..Mike Orton...Brad Gabler and the others that transferred from San Miguel to Guam. I thank Roger Hanthorn for having the time and patience to take a few snaps here and there. I'll be sure to get the current ones back to all of you once I return from my long overdue getaway.

Whoa! I finally found some more of my lost past via this website. I sure hope that all the broken links to various things like the "Photo Gallery", will soon be up-and-running.   I arrived there in Dec '81, and left Jan '85. Initially, I started out in the NSCP Message Center, but I really hated the routine, and found it very boring. So I started hanging out in Technical Control on my off days, reading pubs, asking questions, and helping out the watch standers,  learning to patch circuits and use the test equipment. Soon I made the switch and was in Tech Control the rest of my tour. I would like to thank RM1 Bill Main for being a great Section Supv and a friend too. Also, anyone who gave me more than five minutes to show me outage-restoring proceedures and logging. Once I went "geek", I've never looked back, and am still in electronics support to this day! I love you guys.

After the 38 months in San Miguel, I immed. went to CommSysTech School in San Diego. I picked up my 2318/2313. Upon graduation,  I received orders to Receiver Site, Technical Control, Diego Garcia BIOT. I REALLY loved it there, and wish I could work there again.   I learned to speak Tagolog, and continue to practice using it on a regular basis. I have a daughter that is 1/2 Filipina who is soon turning 18 and on her way to college.

Does anyone remember the Message Center Chief, RMCM James Porter? ('80-'84) He was a REAL piece of work, who left quite an impression and impact on most people that worked for him. I'd love to talk to him again and say "hello".   God bless the Navy, God bless you all too.

My dad (E.J. Burke) commanded the station from 1968-71, while I graduated from high school in Subic (as did my sister Kathleen two years later) and spent my first two years of college at Virginia Military Institute.  I couldn't join the Navy (couldn't pass the physical), so spent 27 years in the Army instead, retiring as an 0-5 in 2000.  My wife is also a retired Army officer, but was smart enough to make 0-6. Dad went on to command the USS Mobile (LKA 115) and then retired in 1977 after being assistant chief of staff for communications for CINCLANT in Norfolk.  He and my mom retired to San Diego, and he died in 1995 from a second bout with cancer. I teach English in a community college in Missouri, and one of my classes is a dual-enrollment course taught in a small-town high school south of St Louis.  None of the students can believe I graduated from an even smaller school than theirs, and in the Philippines, to boot. Of course, most of them are not really sure where the Philippines are. Our time in San Miguel was a very happy period in our family's life--my dad very much enjoyed his work, and felt he had really contributed to people's quality of life, with the building of the community center, the street dances, and the construction of Foxtrot barracks.  He was particularly proud of all the toasters in the mess hall.  In many ways, I think it was the highlight of his 34 years in the Navy. Thank you for keeping this site and the memory of an extraordinary place alive!

Used to go TAD with AMCC Ashore Mobile Contingency Communications to Thailand, Malaysia and some other places that I can't remember. Would really piss the wife off for me to go TAD to Thailand from the Philippines. What a fuggin racket! I was an RM2 when stationed there lived in base housing about a block from the bowling alley. What was the Enlisted club called? CPO's was Golden Anchor. Speaking of, I made RMC in '91 and took an early retirement in '93 when we outlasted the Soviets! Learned to SCUBA dive there. Was a Coral Climber! Any divers or anyone else that knows me drop a note. If ya don't know me and wanna flashback to the P.I. with me, thats cool too. Later days shipmates.

I was doing my best to stay round long enough to get my 2318, but didn't quite make it.  Sure did spend some great days and nights at the Crossroads, "O'Poe", and every little hamlet in between. I don't remember too many people from there, I don't know why, I do remember catching softball for one of the finest pitchers in the world, a guy by the last name of Weinke, don't remember even what his first name was, his rate or anything.  Played golf a lot with three guys on sand greens there at San Miguel,  RM2 Boss, RM2 Gene Sheppard, and RM3 Jerry Smith.  I also remember a guy by the name of Hand, a CT3. A great guy.  If anyone should remember, I left the PI with a unit called ATCU-100, went down to Cubi, stayed there for a while prep, then off to Danang.  If anyone remembers this unit please give a shout,   Real Loud. It seems that the Navy and Marine Corps don't remember us too well.  I can't find any record of it ever existing.  If you remember, anyone attached to the AIR TRANSPORTABLE COMMUNICATIONS UNITS, please get in touch!!!!!

Jim Hext, RM2-RM1, RMC Ret. Receiver Site, 1964 - 1966
jim0507@cox.net

Section Supervisor receiver site, can just remember a few names of some tech controllers, guess it is because I must have passed a million QSY's to them on the o/w. Remember Spidale, (spi), Payton, (pt), and Kowalski, (ski), and also a RM1 Green, and one other guy, a RM1 Liu, he was from Samoa. Had HF receivers out there the size of 2 refrigerators side by side. Not cystal controlled, so you had to zero beat them to lock in. Never worried about authorized freqs, if the freq was clear you used it, often wondered how many people we interferred with. Set up the KW7 ship/shore out there, worked Maddox and Turner Joy on special CW circuits set up for them after the incident. Lived in base housing right close to the exchange and base security ( I remember base security because had a 30 day base restriction and had to muster there at least 15 times a day ). Drove a Lambretta skotter back and forth to work at the receiver site. Playin acey docey at the Pardise club. Standing shore patrol out at the cross roads with the Philippine constabulary, them armed to the gills. Had a 57 Chevy while i was there, how can you start out at San Maguel and next morning wake up in Angeles City and not remember getting there? Sold it, before I left, to a Philipino, probably still there as a taxi. Playing golf on the base on the sand greens and not making it past the 9th tee. (sold beer there). I just remember one other guy, he made RMC while I was there, name was Menges, married to Philpina, lived on base, had a weight problem and was continously on the lose weight program. After San Miguel, was at NCS Japan, Yokosuka, USS Oklahoma City CLG-5, homeported in Yoko, then to Navy Transmitting Facility Lualualei, Hawaii, where I retired as RMC in 1977, after 20 years active service. Stayed in Hawaii for 21 years then moved to Phoenix, Az in 96. Worked on Surtass ships, (USNS) for RCA/G.E  for 6 years as Satallite Tech, Contractor at Army missile range Kwajalien, Army missile range Ascension Island, Lockheed Martin as contractor on Global star project. Retired now, taking it easy.

One of the greatest times and most memorable times in my life, I will always remember the PI and the many great friends I made there.  Have been looking for others as well, in particular: David Bradfeldt and Willard Crossman.   I too got addicted to San Miguel beer.  Saw some here in the states but for some reason it don't taste the same.  I lived with my girlfriend for the longest time but I never got married.  The two friends I mentioned above ended getting married to their honey-ko's.   But, I loved the partying, it was almost a daily thing.  Missed listening to my favorite filipino band "D' Fabulous Frictions."   Those guys could really play...I mean, "Jam."   I still have some of my music that I purchased there and have some pictures too.  When I'm feeling stressed and want to relax I listen to the music from that era...it's very soothing and then I catch myself smiling cuz I back in those days and just reminisce. Who did I work with?  I can't remember the some names but there was:  Bradfeldt, Crossman, Steve Hanson, Jazmin (he tried to hook me up with his niece), James Pancho, Radomski, Voiron, oh.. Samurai (the arab guy), Bob Hickox, Dunbar, "Ozzie" Osborn. I was called, "Chief" not because of my rank but I was probably the only american-indian in San Miguel and the locals thought I was a filipino.  I remember doing a burn-run on a mid-watch and I was asked to scare one of the new "bootcamps" by sneaking around the terminal building, taking off my shirt and giving a big yell while holding a fake spear (brook stick).   The new boot was, "Fergie" Ferguson.  He and one of the others was out that night doing a burn run behind the terminal building.  I can't remember who was with, Fergie, but I remember him saying, "whats that, look, over there..it's a Huk."   You should of seen Fergie, he beat the other guy to the entrance of the terminal building.  Oh, that was hilarious!  EM Club waitresses:  Prezy, Dana, of course..the mama san, Laura;  did I miss anybody else? Feel free to drop me a line.

Teletype Repair and Offline Crypto Repair.     Loved it at San Miguel, great duty station.  Spent a little time in the terminal building during Tonkin Gulf affair.  There was sure a lot of Flash and T.S. messages getting relayed through the station during that period.      Came back in 1973 (I think it was 1973 as a BU2, had broken service).  Was on detachment from NMCB 133, to build a new Hobby Shop.  Left there for Guam, because they needed a BU2 for the main body and there was a Filipino BU2 on or detachment so I volunteered to go to Guam.  Much prefer San Miguel.

Hello... San Miguel was my first duty station and by far, was the best. It's an awesome little base that I like to call "paradise" in terms of duty staions.  I met my wife Pauline there.  I worked in the Terminal Building. After closing, I went to Subic.  I was there during the big earthquake in Bagio, and in San Antonio during Mt. Pinotubo.  I loved it there.

CTO3 when I was at San Miguel.  I was stationed in San Miguel from March 1970 til June 1971.  I worked at receivers before I went TAD afloat.  I spent TAD time on the Stoddert (DDG-22), the Gridley (DLG-21) and the Halsey (DLG-23).   I was slow to warm up to the Philippines. I think it took me close to five or six months before I spent much time off the base. I spent a lot of time in San Antonio, and I remember biking to San Narciso.  By the time I left, I loved the place, and have been back twice since. I ended up marrying a girl from the Philippines. I've been in touch with CTO branchers Gary Garrison and Dan O'Connell.  I've also swapped e-mails with 'M' brancher Warren Ward and 'O' brancher Tim Donohue.  About twenty years ago I spoke to Frank Trumble (Biggs now).  He's in Portland, Or.  There are a bunch of other guys I'd like to get in touch with.  One in particular is a guy named Jim Harper, whom we called Jim Butterfly because of a t-shirt he wore. Would like to hear from anyone who was there with me.  Looking forward to seeing this great site grow.
